The Valley of the Fire State Park north of Las Vegas has some wonderfully unique landscape, which makes a great opportunity for taking some wonderful photos for landscape photographers. The landscape is filled with Red rocks with oxidized iron formation.

The erosion has left a sculpture like rock formations.

The rodeo is also popular with kids and this event is part of many rodeo circuits around the Western US. Taking photos of the rodeo in action needs the photographer to have patience and be able to anticipate the where the action may flow.

Capturing of the action is not that easy, because in many occasions the rodeo is taking place during the night under the artificial light. For these photos, the aperture has to open wide to let the light in, but the shutter speed has to be fast to capture the action without blurring. The aperture and shutter speed are working against each other. A good photographer must balance these to obtain the best shot.

The use of flash is misunderstood by many novice photographers. One can see flashes from cameras hundreds of feet away in big sports events or concerts. The built-in flash only has 20 to 30 feet range. In contrast, on sunny days, one does not see the flash in operation when taking photos.

The flash should not be used in big sports events or concerts. It will not light up a person that is hundred feet away and will not help to obtain better photos. Instead it will drain the battery of the camera quickly. But the flash should be used on a sunny day, especially when taking photos of people. The flash will “in-fill” the dark or shade areas, which is caused by the harsh sun light. Using the flash will eliminate the “raccoon eye” effect. This is opposite instinct of a novice photographer. In order to improve the end result, the novice photographers have to learn new skills.

The landscape of San Francisco area is beautiful, with the land mark Golden Gate Bridge. In the Morning, the fog roles into the bay. The photo from Crissy Field (on Eastside of the bridge) looking out to the sea gives the best shot.

If one seek to have a dramatic shadow of the bridge, one should head to Baker beach.

In the afternoon, as the sun shift to the West, the vantage point for a great shot of the bridge is on the West side on the Kirby Cove area. From there a drive down to Point Bonita Lighthouse is a great photo opportunity. Some of the TV ad for vehicles was shot on this road, with jaw dropping background.
